Can poetry be formal? Or by its creative nature is it informal or casual?

In my opinion, most poetry is informal. Because of its creative nature and unconventiality (no two poems are alike), poetry lacks formality. Depending on a person's definition of "formal," however, this may differ.

Poetry is a creative way for people to tell a story, and usually leaves the reader with some kind of feeling after being read. Poetry is informal because there are (most of the time) no set guidelines to writing a poem, it's just however you feel.

I think poetry is phrases that convey thoughts and emotion that flow together

I agree with Kelsey i do not think poetry is formal. It does depend though on what you think formal is. I do not think it is formal because you can get away with saying certain things that you can not in most writing. I think that poetry is creative because it uses a lot of figurative language, which makes it less formal.

Is poetry more fun than prose? If yes, then why did everyone look so scared yesterday!?

Poetry is an expression of deep thought and emotions.

This is Megan M. by the way. Oh and all definitions here seem to be accurate.

I believe that poetry is just an association of words that captures and embodies the feelings, emotions, or beliefs of the writer. It comes from the heart and truely cannot be censored without loss of meaning.

In response to the formal/informal debate: Poetry can't be either. In a poem, you could say whatever you want. This means that it could not make sense at all. When you use these terms to catagorize it, you might miss the poem's purpose.

Of course, that is just my opinion.

Potry is a written form used to express thoughts, feelings and opinions. Poems often rhyme or the words flow together with a certain rhythm

I believe poetry is an outlet for emotions, expressions, opinions, hopes, and dreams that people want to express in writing. It can contain facts, but the more figurative language thats in it, the more interesting it seems to be. Poetry has to have a form or shape. Finally, poetry is collection of ideas written formally or informally.

Poetry is the captivation of a writers feelings and emotions. Poetry makes the reader think in depth about what the writer says and what the writer actually means.

Poetry consists of many observations and opinions of a poet in the form of short phrases and/or sentences that do not have grammatical boundaries, like prose.
